EAN-8, administrated by EAN (European Article Numbering Association, now called International Article Numbering Association), is used for general product identification in countries other than the US and Canada.

An EAN-8 symbol is encoded from 8 digits, including a check digit calculated by Bar Code Pro (r). Two or five digits may be added to the basic symbol as a supplemental number to the second text edit field. As part of the symbol, the digits are usually printed in OCR-B font.
