UPC (Universal Product Code) is used in the United States and Canada. It is a subset of EAN (European Article Number). (A) stands for Version A. Its simplest form (basic part) is encoded from 12 digits consisting of the number system character, a 5-digit manufacturer identification number, a 5-digit item number and a check digit. Two or five digits may be added to the basic symbol as a supplemental number to the second text edit field. The human-readable is suggested to be printed in OCR-B font.
